Garage Door Troubleshooting

The electronic garage door has many moving components that collectively play a part in the proper operation of the door. If one part fails, it can transfer the added stress to the other components causing them to overwork and eventually malfunction themselves. Doing a little maintenance periodically can prevent this from happening. Here are some basic steps to troubleshooting your door that will assist you along the way.

Lubricate Components

As mention before, the moving garage door components are very important and should be lubricated periodically. Avoid such lubricants such as WD-40 which easily collects dust and grit. This filth wears down the bearings and creates an unwanted black-pasty buildup. It is best to use a lubrication spray that is specifically designed for garage door use only. Spray all garage door rollers, hinges, and springs.  By doing this several times per year, breakdowns and malfunctions will remain at a minimum.

Examine Cables

Examine the steel cables for breakage and wear and tear. If they are worn and frayed, they will need to be replaced. Tighten Loose Parts

Check all screws, nuts, and bolts to make sure they are securely tightened. Pay special attention to the bolts that mount the garage door track. It could be quite disastrous to have the entire door fall from its tracks and landing on someone or personal property.

Check Springs System

Evaluate the spring system to make sure there is no rust. A buildup of rust will eventually cause the springs to break, especially with older springs. In the event that they are rusty, take a filing tool and file it away.
